Cumming

The upscale little town making headlines with its easy commute to ATL and its vivacious community personality.

Welcome to Cumming

An exurban retreat less than 40 miles from the sprawling flurry of Atlanta, Cumming is known as the Gateway to Leisure and rests along the south end of Lake Lanier. The city is populated by well-to-do commuters looking to explore the mix of luxury and nature and who find the easy trip to ATL — a straight shot down 400 — one of the area’s main appeals.

From its early beginnings as a rural town ensconced by the slopes of The Sawnee Mountain Preserve to its status as one of the top-priced luxury areas on Lake Lanier, Cumming has been enriched by its colorful history. The dedication of its residents has contributed to the emergence of a thriving downtown, incredible city amenities — including one of the most-loved aquatic centers in the area — and events that draw the attention of the entire state.

While there are plenty of options for those partial to historic homes, many of the residential Cumming real estate consists of newer-build, single-family homes that dazzle with their timeless custom combinations of architectural styles, including traditional, ranch, and brick-front exteriors. Homes often feature spacious plots and lawns — ideal for those hoping to unwind and relax.

Dining, Entertainment, and Shopping

Foodies and retail enthusiasts can appreciate the vast assortment of commercial options in Cumming, from downtown’s niche local shops and cafes to outdoor shopping malls such as The Collection. Here, arbored streets and a central statement fountain decorate the lush landscape that contains restaurants, high-end brands, and 90 stores, including Altar’d State and White House Black Market.

Vickery Village is another must-visit complex with independent specialty retail and a significant number of local eats. Among these are gems like Nido Cafe, a breakfast and lunch powerhouse dishing out sumptuous coffees, tapas, and drinks. Known for their prime steaks and fresh seafood, The Ridge maintains an entertaining rotation of live music and dancing in addition to its menu of top-tier American cuisine.

The Polo Golf and Country Club is another remarkable source of fine dining. After a round on their award-winning golf courses, nothing tastes better than the refined seasonal fare of their elegant restaurant, The Tack Room. A heated outdoor patio is also available for seating and offers spectacular views of the golf course and surrounding landscape.

Things to Do

As is the case in many of the towns surrounding Lake Lanier, one of the most enjoyable excursions available in Cumming is taking to the water. The city has two marinas for boaters in addition to neighborhood and community docking. Baldridge is known as one of the premier marinas on the whole lake, while Habersham is the closest dry-stack marina to ATL.

Each month, residents and visitors have the chance to peruse items from the past at the Lakewood 400 Antiques Market. Delighting shoppers with jewelry, home goods, furniture, collectibles, and art on sale, this is a kid-friendly and community-centered affair.

Cumming’s true claim to fame is its fairgrounds, which host the annual Cumming Country Fair and Festival. The event draws in over a quarter-million visitors during its 11-day run, during which the crowds can take part in rides, games, sampling from food vendors, rodeos, and live entertainment.
